Where Old Ellicott City's Evenings Go This Fall While The Corner Gets Built

"One of the things we came up with is we are Old Ellicott City's living room," Jeni Porter told Baltimore Fishbowl in August, describing the venue she is building in the former Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar space on Main Street. That living room won't be open this fall. Until it is, an evening out in Old Ellicott City runs through a few operators who already work the block, plus a run of seasonal programs. Most of those programs wrap up by mid-November and hand off to the holiday events.

The calendar below follows that sequence, starting with the venue that isn't open yet.

The Corner opened for one afternoon, and the real opening is aimed at winter

Crazy Mason closed on Aug. 30. Don Reuwer, who co-owns the building, told Baltimore Fishbowl the space was leased to a nonprofit that will run an arts venue, "having music and plays and comedy." That nonprofit is Ripple Effect Collective. Porter, who also owns Little Market Café, started it, and she has said the programming will include movies too.

The name comes from the building's past. It once housed a theatrical space called The Little Theater on the Corner, and Porter liked that the end of "The" and the start of "Corner" spell out E and C. She had wanted the space for years. Before it can open, the stage has to be expanded and lighting and sound systems installed.

The public got a first look during Main Street Music Fest on Sept. 19, the day the Kelly Bell Band headlined the main stage. According to The Wingspan, Centennial High School's student newspaper, volunteers spent that temporary opening collecting feedback from visitors on how they could be part of the project. Porter told the paper she didn't have an exact opening date but hoped "to be open by January [or] February." The plans she described range from student art shows and collegiate debates to family movies and senior proms.

So October, November, and December will run without it. For now, live music on Main Street comes from Porter's other business.

The courtyard concerts point you up the hill to The Wine Bin

Little Market Café hosts Concerts on the Courtyard at Tonge Row. The music is free, with evening sets on Fridays and Saturdays and afternoon sets on weekends. The concerts are BYOB, and the café's events page suggests stopping at The Wine Bin at the top of Main Street before the music starts.

The Wine Bin's owner, Dave Carney, has a second Main Street business now. In July he opened Vesper at Pike & Main at 8210 Main St., in the space Revel & Main held until 2023 and Pure Wine Cafe before that, as the Baltimore Business Journal reported. Chef Rachel Bindel runs the kitchen. She graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and has worked at Michelin-starred restaurants, including Tail Up Goat in Washington, D.C. In an August profile from the Ellicott City Partnership, Carney said he wants guests "to feel as if you're sitting in Midtown Manhattan or Washington D.C."

That puts free music in a courtyard, a wine shop that supplies it, and a cocktail dining room at the top of the street in the hands of two Main Street operators who send customers back and forth. The Corner is the next piece in that group.

A weekly rhythm, by night

Here's how the regular evening slots line up for the rest of October, based on what each business has posted.

Night Where What's posted
Thursday Ellicott Distilling Co., 8090 Main St. Happy hour, trivia at 8 p.m., karaoke at 9 p.m., with listings through Oct. 29
Friday Little Market Café courtyard South Rolling on Oct. 16 and Strings Attached on Oct. 23, both 6 to 8 p.m.
Saturday Little Market Café courtyard Panama Rex, a Jimmy Buffett tribute, on Oct. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m., and Work in Progress on Oct. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Tuesday Vesper at Pike & Main "A Spirited Supper – Celebrating Bourbon" on Oct. 27, cocktails at 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m.

Strings Attached is a duo of two Howard County teachers who play country, bluegrass, and folk. The café's weekend afternoon sets keep going too, with Brendan Palen at noon on Oct. 17, The Wafflers on Oct. 18, and the Reilly Goulait Band on Oct. 25.

Vesper's Soirée Series works differently from the courtyard. It's ticketed and seats everyone at one time, and the Oct. 13 "Chef Rachel is Back!" dinner already shows as sold out. For the bourbon supper on Oct. 27, booking early matters more than showing up early.

The café's posted lineup currently ends with the Oct. 31 Work in Progress set. November will depend on whatever the café posts next and on the seasonal programs below.

After 8:30, the history tours take over

The latest regular evening slot on Main Street belongs to Maryland History Tours. Its Mt. Misery Ghost Walks run on Fridays (Oct. 16, 23 and 30, then Nov. 6 and 13), and its Haunted Main Street Ghost Tours run on Saturdays (Oct. 17, 24 and 31, then Nov. 7 and 14). Every tour starts at 8:30 p.m. Those start times leave room for a 6 to 8 p.m. courtyard set first.

Two one-off programs add to October. On Oct. 22, Maryland History Tours and the Museum of Howard County History host History of Maryland Witches on Mt. Misery. On Oct. 24 and 31, the B&O Ellicott City Station Museum offers Museum After Dark tours from 7 to 8:30 p.m., focused on what Visit Howard County calls "the deadly stories and ghostly tales of the B&O railroad."

Put those listings together and two Saturdays fill from morning to late evening.

Saturday, Oct. 24

  • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Closing Early plays the café courtyard
  • Morning: The Old Ellicott City Farmers' Market's final regular Saturday at Tiber Park, 8061 Main St.
  • 7 to 8:30 p.m.: Museum After Dark at the B&O museum
  • 8:30 p.m.: Haunted Main Street Ghost Tour

Saturday, Oct. 31

  • 4 p.m.: Trick or Treat on Main Street, with the Partnership's details still to be announced
  • 5 to 7 p.m.: Work in Progress on the courtyard
  • 7 to 8:30 p.m.: Museum After Dark
  • 8:30 p.m.: Haunted Main Street Ghost Tour

After Nov. 14 the ghost tours are done, and the evening calendar moves to the holiday season.

November thins out, then the holiday dates take over

The gap between Halloween and the holidays is short. The farmers' market comes back to Tiber Park for a Thanksgiving market on Nov. 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. After that, the season runs through these dates:

  1. Nov. 27 to Jan. 3: The free Holiday Train Garden at the B&O Ellicott City Station Museum, 3711 Maryland Ave., open during regular museum hours. Howard County lists 410-313-1945 for information.
  2. Nov. 28, 1 p.m.: Small Business Saturday on Main Street, details still to be announced.
  3. Dec. 4, 6 p.m.: Midnight Madness on Main Street, with the Partnership's program also still to be announced. Visit Howard County describes the event as a first-Friday-in-December tradition that has included a tree lighting, but the 2026 listing hasn't confirmed one yet.

There's also a second train garden off Main Street. The Ellicott City Volunteer Fire Department planned to start building its 2026 display in mid-October at the firehouse, 4150 Montgomery Road. For families planning a train garden outing, the two locations make an easy pair.

What the January date means for Main Street

If The Corner opens when Porter hopes, it will arrive after Midnight Madness and around the time the B&O train garden closes on Jan. 3. That timing would put a dedicated music, theater, and movie venue right after the holiday events end. Until then, Main Street's evenings run on the courtyard's weekend sets, Ellicott Distilling's Thursdays, Vesper's seated suppers, the 8:30 ghost tours, and the December holiday events. The Partnership's events calendar and the Little Market Café events page are the two places to watch for The Corner's first dated show.
